The Story of Mahaco (submitted by Drew "The Wizard" Cope)

Through all of the new birth recruiting efforts in the Spring of 1999, we picked up a lot of new first year students, one of which was this crazy soccer player named Brian. I wasn't really sure why he enjoyed coming out so much, but he did and we needed players. The crazy part was that he had this incredible knack for doing anything and everything possible to torture his body in inhuman attempts to catch the disc, and he usually succeeded or went down in a blaze of bone crunching glory. It was not surprising to me that he got really excited every time Tim told us the story of Abuse Boy from the U of MD team he played on. Despite all this, Brian did not yet have a nickname. After a few crazy weeks of layouts on the Drexel astroturf, Brian went to [soccer] Coach Wagner, returned his ball and cones and quit the Eastern College Men's soccer team to play ULTIMATE!!
I was working diligently on bringing the 2 year old website up-to-date. Tim had designed some new JavaScript for the profiles page and I was actively typing them up player by player. When I came to a person who I lacked a piece of information for, such as a nickname, favorite saying, or hometown, I made something up that seemed appropriate. When I came to Brian I thought for a minute and said to myself, "something Indian sounding." I don't know why, but I did. I wanted to do a strange word so I could put 'meaning (something)' next to it. Well after a few moments the word Mahaco came to me. I typed it in. The next logical step was to add the phrase, "Meaning, the crazy one."
To make this story short, what began as a web page joke, became a life long nickname that is still called in ISO plays today. For a game made up of a group of people who are more or less, coming out for a little relaxing fun and some exercise, Mahaco plays with an incredibly strong competitive edge that scares some players, and motivates others. Brian became a captain in the Fall of 1999 and helped lead the team on towards the sectional playoffs in Spring 2000.
